What is the difference between a freezer and a refrigerator?

A refrigerator, commonly referred to as a fridge, is designed to keep food and beverages cool at a temperature that slows down the growth of bacteria and prevents spoilage. The ideal temperature range for a refrigerator is typically between 35°F to 40°F (2°C to 4°C), which is cool enough to keep perishable items fresh for several days but not so cold that it would freeze them solid. Refrigerators are typically used for storing fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, and other perishable items.

On the other hand, a freezer is designed to keep food and other items at a much lower temperature, typically between 0°F to -10°F (-18°C to -23°C), to halt the growth of bacteria and preserve food for longer periods. Freezers are ideal for storing meat, fish, poultry, and other foods that need to be kept frozen to prevent spoilage. They can also be used to store baked goods, leftovers, and other items that can be enjoyed later on.

The key difference is that a refrigerator keeps food cool to slow down spoilage, while a freezer keeps food frozen to halt spoilage altogether. Additionally, the two appliances are typically used in conjunction with each other in modern kitchens, with the refrigerator used for daily food storage and the freezer reserved for long-term storage of perishable items.
